03-09-2010 - Last year’s best newcomers will fly the flag of St. Petersburg

On September 11th, St. Petersburg will announce the start of the „Silk Way Rally“ marathon. The „City Service SPb“ team, representing St. Petersburg, will show up on the start line together with other participants of the race. The crew of the outstanding green color car is represented by the well known race driver Benediktas Vanagas and his long time co-driver Saulius Jurgelenas. This crew was the best performing new-comers of the 2009 event.

Benediktas Vanagas was inspired by this good result and aim for even better results this year; “It took a long time for us to find the right sponsor, who could help us to prepare properly for a race on this level” , he says. “City Service” is the largest private residential facilities management company in St.Petersburg.
“Now we are very happy to participate in this exclusive motorsport event, and also to represent the wonderful city of St. Petersburg”, - says B. Vanagas.
“City Service SPb“ crew made their debut in the “Silk Way Rally” last year, and managed already then the 5th place in their vehicle class (T1.1), and the 8th place overall. They won two Special Stages in their own class and achieved to be the best performers of the new-comers.
This year the team will participate with “OSCar”, a car, much more powerful than last year’s. This car has a 8 cylinders , 5.7 l, 305 HP engine. B. Vanagas says that last year they, most probably could have been much faster on certain Special Stages, and believes that this year new car will allow them to show their absolute best.
“Last year’s “Silk Way Rally” was the first marathon-rally for the crew. The first days, last year, we had to outdrive more than a half of our competitors, since we as unknown new faces in rally raids we had to start among the last. We both, Benediktas and me, had to learn specifics of the marathon quickly. Partway in to the marathon we were already reaching the well known crews”, - claims S. Jurgelenas.
“When we reached the finish, just after the VW team the 7th stage, we understood that we were able to compete with the more experienced participants. In spite the sharper competition this year, we still aim to be among the top- ten”, -says an inspired B. Vanagas.
This year’s organizers promise several fast WRC type stages, where Benediktas Vanagas expects to use his solid experience of rally racing. The multiple winner of several rally championships has already proved that they are able to achieve good result in this hard “Silk Way Rally”, even with a less powerful vehicle.
The „City Service SPb“ team is related to St. Petersburg by success-story on off-road competition, “Ladoga Trophy”. In 2009, in the international off-road marathon B. Vanagas and S. Jurgelenas got second place in their class. This result was repeated by B. Vanagas this year, but with another co-driver. After leading the competition for a good while, they had to give away their leading position, due to a misfortunate situation, to their colleagues from St. Petersburg. S. Jurgelenas could not co-drive in several rallies last year due to bad back injuries, but he is now back for the “Silk Way Rally” again, and are very much fit for fight.
