Separated this year, for logistical reasons, into two distinct parts, the SILK WAY RALLY is about to get underway from the historic city of Xi’an, direction Alashan Youki in Inner Mongolia.
After the success of the event run entirely in Russia last June between Astrakhan and Moscow, won by the Saudi driver Yazeed Al Rajhi (MINI John Cooper Works) and the Russian Andrei Karginov (Kamaz), there are this time no less than 50 cars that will fight for victory on leaving the first Chinese imperial city. Further proof of the growing interest in the biggest off-road rally organised between Europe and Asia, inspired by the mythical Silk Road.
After two days of scrutineering held at the ‘Innovation Park’ in Xi’an, the crews will set off for Alashan Youqi (Inner Mongolia) for 1,600 kilometres of racing, run as four stages in the heart of the Gobi Desert.
With no less than 800 kilometres of special stage in the centre of the giant dunes, at times ‘decorated’ with lakes and oasis, in breath-taking scenery, the race, run under the joint aegis of the Chinese and Russian Sports Ministries, as well as that of the local administrations, promises to be a fascinating one.
